Briar Hill Primary School

Briar Hill is a warm and happy school with well-being at the heart. All children are challenged, nurtured and inspired to achieve highly and make a positive contribution to society.

Talk for Writing Training Centre

At Briar Hill Primary School, we are proud to be nationally recognised for our highly effective teaching of English as a Talk for Writing training centre. Talk for Writing is a methodology created and developed by Pie Corbett and Julia Strong. As a result of our exemplary work, Briar Hill have also been featured in the Transforming Learning Across the Curriculum book, where the school provided a case study and video clips of our teachers and pupils in action.

Talk for Writing principles and practices are firmly embedded across Briar Hill School and have impacted positively upon standards in reading, writing and across the curriculum; leadership practice and the development of an approach to CPD with research at its heart. The highly effective and inclusive practice of our teachers is underpinned by well-structured, clearly sequenced and progressive whole school planning that ensures both quality and coverage. Progression is guaranteed by an evolving bank of model texts that stretches from Nursery to Year 6.

We ensure that each visit is carefully tailored to meet the needs of other schools so that there is always excellent impact from our input. We have a full menu of services for Talk for Writing, Talk for Reading and Talk for Writing Across the Curriculum. We can respond to the individual needs of any school or organisation on request.

School visits can include observing lessons and the environment for writing, looking at children’s work, talking with children, teachers and school leaders and training in the ‘hub’. In addition, we have and use all of Pie’s published resources.
