Northampton’s Briar Hill Primary School receives flagship inclusion status
Northampton’s Briar Hill Primary School, part of the David Ross Education Trust, has been recognised as a national Flagship School for inclusion.
The primary school was evaluated during an inspection against a nationally-recognised framework for the Inclusion Quality Mark(IQM) Award.
The IQM Award provides UK schools with a nationally recognised validation of their inclusive practice and ongoing commitment to developing educational inclusion. The prestigious IQM Flagship School Award is the highest award a school can receive.
External assessor, Anne Spencer, praised the academy and its staff and students within the report. She commented: “Briar Hill Primary School excels in its inclusive practice. The school is seamless in triangulating learning with behaviour and emotional well-being for all of its community.
“From the moment you enter the school, there is a feeling of inclusiveness with a focus on achievement for all.
“The focus of positive outcomes is evident throughout the school. All pupils are motivated and engaged and each pupil I spoke to said they loved school. One pupil described school as ‘bright, colourful and happy.’ This is clear in the attitudes all pupils display and their relationships with the staff.”
The assessor’s report also found that parents are effectively involved in their children’s learning and receive regular communications from the school, and staff actively promote a safe and happy environment where pupils can flourish.
The report noted that teaching staff follow an effective Marking Policy, which is evident in pupils’ books where ‘marking clearly shows what is expected of all pupils as well as differentiated learning objectives to challenge the pupils according to their ability’.
Janey Cooksley, Headteacher at Briar Hill Primary School, said: “I am thrilled to see that Briar Hill Primary School has rightly earned its Flagship School status. We are committed to providing a world-class education for each and every one of our pupils, and inclusion is at the heart of everything we do.
“Being part of the David Ross Education Trust means that we are able to actively share ideas with other schools across our Trust and support each other to assure the quality of our own provision. This award truly reflects the hard work of our pupils, staff and members of our school community.”
